EFTPOS Paper RollsEFTPOS means “electronic fund transfer point of sale.” The acronym is pronounced as a word rather than spelled out letter by letter.EFTPOS is the system in Australia and New Zealand that allows banks and merchants to communicate with each other about the validity of debit or credit cards used to make purchases. Like other systems around the world, the customer swipes his credit or debit card in a special machine which immediately communicates with the issuing bank to see if funds are available to make the purchase. Once permission has been given by the bank for the transfer, the EFTPOS register prints out a receipt for the customer. Since this system was installed in the '60s, it has facilitated over 8 billion sales. That is a lot of paper rolls. EFTPOS is not just the name of the communications system. It also is used as a brand name for the unique equipment and accessories that are manufactured for it. EFTPOS paper rolls come in many sizes ready to fit into the wide variety of printers used in the system. These rolls can come as two-ply carbonless with each ply white, or with white paper as the top ply and yellow as the bottom. Another option available for almost any EFTPOS printer is single-ply bond paper. Thermal rolls are a third option. This is the lightweight, inexpensive paper impregnated with an ink that becomes visible when it is passed through a thermal printer head. It does not deliver the same high quality as bond paper and can be inadvertently marked with something as simple as a fingernail scratch. However, considering the short time that most people keep receipts, it is a great money-saving option for businesses that use a lot of paper. With a purchasing system as popular as the EFTPOS, printer rolls for the specialized equipment that drives it are in high demand. Businesses have several options when they consider what to buy, including: one-ply, two-ply carbonless, and thermal paper. |
